The CG stands for Commercial Grade. So this serger will be able to handle a wide variety of projects for a very long time.

If you love the look of activewear, you’ll be creating your own yoga pants that fit perfectly with the fabric that you like.

And I’ll quickly say that if you like knits, you will want this overlocker to create stretchable seams. It’s faster and easier than using the zig-zag stitch on your sewing machine.

Introduction

An overlocker will finish seams for you quickly. It can cut the extra fabric and produce an overlocking stitch that keeps seams firmly together so your project will last a long time.

The Singer 14CG754  has the standard 2-3-4 thread capability. It provides a flexible seam for both woven and knit fabrics.

Is it suitable for beginners?

Yes, it is an excellent first overlocker for beginners. The color-coded lay-in threading makes setting up your machine very fast and easy.

Online instructional videos go in depth to everything a beginner would need. Even an advanced sewist could learn something since there’s a lot of flexibility with the features including decorative edging.

Is it portable and strong enough for quality stitching?

Yes, this serger is lightweight, portable and strong enough to keeps all the moving parts in alignment for skip-free sewing.

Pros of the Singer profinish serger

Speed

The Singer serger 14CG754 has a super fast speed of 1,300 stitches per minute. You’ll be attaching borders to your king sized quilts in no time.

And if you follow assembly line techniques for piecing, your projects will get done in days rather than weeks.

Rolled Hems

It has four built-in rolled hems. It allows you to make fancy looking cloth napkins as well as simple ravel-free hems on very lightweight material like a chiffon skirt or silk shirt.

Rolled hems are great for creating decorative designs on fabrics as well as clean looking hems on lightweight and medium fabrics.

It’s easy to switch over to do rolled hems on the Singer pro finish serger. You move a lever over to R from S., and you set up the machine to use one needle.

Rolled hems roll the fabric under as it stitches. So you don’t want to be doing rolled hems on heavy fabrics.

Adjustable stitch width and length

There are adjustable stitch length and width on the Singer serger 14CG754. These allow you to make adjustments with your projects.

You may want a more narrow seam for thinner fabrics and a wider one for heavier fabrics. When you get your device, you’ll want to test it out on the types of fabrics you like using.

Thread tension

You also have control over the thread tension. You can read the manual or look online as to how to adjust the tensions to get even stitching.

Feed

The 14CG754 also has an adjustable differential feed. This ensures that the fabric feeds through evenly for pucker-free results. You can adjust the differential feed if you do want to ease fabric together.

That can be very useful when setting in sleeves to the armhole. And sometimes you do want the pucker like when you’re creating ruffles.

You’ll want to play with this when you get it to see how much faster you’ll sew seams evenly.

Cons of the Singer 14CG754

Timing can go off on this overlocker, and you may need to bring it into a shop to get it adjusted.

Singer 14CG754 profinish 2-3-4 thread serger can be delicate if it's not treated well. For example, they shouldn’t be dropped. And you shouldn’t pull the fabric through if it feels like it’s getting stuck.

When you run into fabric bunching up, or it’s not stitching correctly, that is a warning that something isn’t working correctly. It may be that you tried to put too much fabric through. Or it could be the tension or the differential feed is off.

It’s best to try to clean the machine out and run some test serging. Then if you can’t get it to create some proper stitching, you will want to bring it in for a tune-up.

Threading needs practice and patience

After reading the Singer pro finish serger reviews, you can easily tell that some people had difficulties threading the lower looper of this machine.

That’s a difficulty with all overlockers. All I can tell you is to keep a cold glass of water nearby. And use the tweezers that come with the serger.

Be patient. And keep one of those dental floss loops with you. It makes it much easier to thread the lower looper. Why I hear you ask? Because it allows you to thread the hole quickly.

Then when you’re ready to pass the thread back to the right-hand side of the machine, you’ll have a better target to grab with your tweezers.

Can I sew sleeves or hem pants?

There is a free arm area that you can use to make it easier to hem pants legs with a simple blind hem or attach cuffs to sleeves. You just pull out the plastic table surface, and it’s right there.

Does it come with a thread?

Yes, the machine is pre-threaded with four cones of white thread.

One little trick that I learned when changing colors is to cut the thread near the cone and then tie it to the end of your new color.

Make a nice surgical knot and snip down the ends. Then the new color will be pulled through, and you won’t have to rethread anything.

How easy is it to switch over to do Blind Hemming?

It’s super easy. You just need to move one little lever and choose which type of blind hem you want to do.

Does it have to cut the fabric?

No. You can move the blades out of the way. And if you’re making a rolled hem, you won’t want it to be cutting the fabric.

Can I use the presser feet from my sewing machine on the serger?

No, because they’re different sizes.

Can I make hems like on the bottom of t-shirts?

No. Those are called “cover stitches, ” and you usually need a 5-thread overlock serger to do the hem the way the manufacturers do or a special cover stitch machine.

Can I use this in place of a sewing machine?

No. It’s meant to complement your sewing machine. A serger like this one will do the overlock stitch while trimming the seam allowance off.

A sewing machine lets you do detail stitching like understitching on a collar, or buttonhole stitches on a button band.

Plus, the sewing machine offers additional decorative stitches, and the Singer pro finish serger does not.

Is it heavy duty serger?

It’s not officially a heavy duty overlocker. You can sew through several layers of denim weight fabric, but it would have difficulties with several layers of upholstery type fabric if you get my meaning.

You can lift the presser foot up a little bit extra, but it may not be enough for something like a thick towel.

One trick is to leave the presser foot down and gently feed the material into the needle area to get it started.

Is it difficult to serge on curves?

No, but it will take some practice.  External curves are easy, and you just need to guide the fabric. Internal curves will require a bit more attention to keep feeding the fabric evenly.

And you can serge squared off corners. You just need to pull the fabric as far open as you can and watch how you guide the fabric through so it catches the innermost point.

Conclusion/Overall Rating

This is a wonderful serger for people who are just starting out. It can do the basics really well. The Singer 14CG754 is durable and can handle multiple layers of denim.

It will let you make professional-looking and securely-finished seams on a wide variety of fabrics. For the price point, you’re getting a well-built serger that will last you a long time.
